Three’s Company, Five’s a Crowd

Never a network to miss an opportunity to milk a good thing, NBC Universal has announced that they are developing two new spin-offs for the rapidly aging, but still popular  Below Deck series on Bravo. One will be Australia and the other in Iceland. Paging Hannah Ferrier!

The Australia franchise will be scripted produced by the same production company 51 Minds, and the Iceland franchise by Shed Media will develop the Iceland spinoff. BTW, I wonder how many people are aware that Mark Cronin (51 Minds) is the genus who gave us The Surreal Life, Flavor of Love, I Love New York, and Rock of Love (all on VH-1) back in the day.

No specific word yet on when or where these will be seen, but I remember really getting into the Real Housewives of Melbourne, only to have it (inexplicably) vanish before our eyes. I’m guessing the Australian franchise will air on Bravo, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Iceland franchise ends up on the Peacock, NBC’s scrap heap of programming.

On a related topic, this (second) season of BD: Sailing Yacht has been a total wash for me; largely due to a completely unlikable cast and fame whorish charter guests. That being said, I used to love the Below Deck series, but between the lousy current season of SH, the shady shenanigans of Capt. Sandy Yawn on last season’s BD: Med, and the increasingly tiresome “Apply, lather, rinse, repeat” format featured on the entire series, I think three franchises will suffice.
