Is TLC Using and Exploiting 1000-lb. Sisters Star?

1000-lb Sisters star, Tammy Slaton, has had a difficult time as a reality TV star, and throughout her three years in the spotlight, Tammy has only fallen further from her weight loss goals. So now, many fans no longer think the series is benefiting Tammy.

Before Tammy starred on1000-lb Sisters, she gained huge popularity appearing on her sister Amy’s YouTube channel.  Together,  Amy and Tammy accumulated millions of views, giving subscribers a glimpse of what life is like for two morbidly obese sisters confined to their home. While on YouTube, Amy and Tammy got a small taste of fame, but once they got their own reality series on TLC, their lives changed. 1000-lb Sisters quickly became a ratings smash, consistently pulling in 1.2 to 1.4 million viewers every week, and now in its third season, the show is showing no signs of slowing down.

Tammy and Amy used 1000-lb Sisters as an incentive to finally put their weight loss ambitions into motion. When audiences were first introduced to them, both of the Slaton sisters were in urgent need of bariatric surgery. But unfortunately, only Amy has taken advantage of the opportunities that came with starring on a hit TV show. Although both Amy and Tammy intended to lose enough weight to qualify for bariatric surgery in 1000-lb Sisters season 1, Tammy has not only continuously failed at losing weight, she has only gained more.

While Amy has stuck to her diet, undergone a gastric bypass operation, and achieved her life-long dream of becoming a mother throughout her few years as a reality TV star, Tammy has only sunken deeper into the depths of life threatening morbid obesity and depression. After failing to lose enough weight in season 1, Tammy gained weight in season 2, largely due to her enabling ex-boyfriend, Jerry Sykes; however, Tammy herself often blamed the pandemic. She eventually broke up with him after being told that he was scamming her. Gee, we didn’t see that coming. Now in its third season, Tammy has a new boyfriend bad influence, Phillip, but she has all but given up, checked out of rehab early, and continues to gain weight, so devoted fans feel that Tammy's career on TV is no longer inspiring her.

1000-lb Sisters is meant to tell the story of Amy and Tammy's joint venture to get their lives back on track. Sadly, fans don't think Tammy has attempted to salvage her health in the reality series for a couple of years. Since season 1, Tammy has grown more comfortable in her weight loss failure. A fan explained that instead of Tammy using her time on the show to improve her fitness like Amy, "We have almost two full seasons of Tammy making excuses and not even trying." The Slaton sisters' supporters also think the network, TLC, is taking advantage of Tammy's seemingly hopeless condition. Instead of encouraging others to work on their health like Amy and Tammy might intend to, another commenter asserted that viewers are only watching Tammy get worse and "TLC is not helping her, they are exploiting her!”.

Tammy has proven to be an entertaining force in 1000-lb Sisters, but fans agree that the TV personality isn't doing herself or viewers any favors by staying on the series. From being exploited by TLC to abandoning the goals that got her on the show in the first place, Tammy's followers think the star should retire from her high-profile platform. Fans have even started a “Save Tammy from TLC” compaign.
