Bravo wants us to know that this is not old-money Real Housewives of New York anymore. Yes, the former cast members Luann de Lesseps, Dorinda Medley, and Sonja Morgan married into money, and then became famous for showcasing their lavish lifestyles. Bethenny Frankel was the exception, and made tens of millions on her own, largely due to her popularity on the show.
But this new cast is already forwarning us that the reboot will not be offering those optics; these are younger, grittier, and much more independent bunch. That isn't to say, there aren't private planes in their future(s), but for the time being, that's just not their realities. Yay ... broke bitch Leah McSweeney times five!
This cast even still flies commercial (the horror!). Jenna Lyons is the former president and executive creative director of J.Crew. Sai De Silva is a blogger for something pamphlet called "Scout the City". Jessel Taank is a fashion publicist and brand consultant. Ubah Hassan is a model and philanthropist. Marketing consultant Brynn Whitfield is another cast member. And Homegirl founder Erin Dana Lichy rounds out the group.
The reboot has "diverse" cast, not unlike Bravo's other flop, Summer House: Martha's Vineyard, that is if you consider all black-ish "diverse". But Bravo is banking on the fans embracing these entrepreneur types who gravitate towards the manic energy of Manhattan.
In an exclusive interview with Cosmopolitan, Sai revealed why her co-stars are still flying commercial. “We didn’t get up and marry rich men and hang out on our yachts. We work. None of us have private planes. I mean, I wish,” she said.
Um yeah, they already tried that (and killed the franchise) when they brought on Ebony K. Nobody and Leah McSweeney.
